FT-990 Update by AJ4FM

Almost a year now since I purchased my FT-990.
My opinion is still the same, this is by far the best radio I've owned in over 52 years of Amateur Radio. I've now added the Inrad 250 Hz CW filter and the 2.0 kHz SSB filter. Great improvement for both modes. I also did the Audio Hiss mod that reduces the HF noise from the IF chain. It consists of adding a 6kHz BW, 455 kHz Ceramic filter just before the IF gain control. I have all the information for anyone that wants it. E-mail address is on QRZ.com I also have the FIF-232C interface unit. I use AALog and Omni Rig to display frequency info in my log entry screen. It also allows me to do the same with MMTTY, but only with 1 program at a time. (COM Port conflict) I disable Omni Rig before I open MMTTY to solve the problem. MMTTY does it's own logging, so best of both worlds. To do FSK from MMTTY I built the FSKit by K4DSP. It takes AFSK from the soundcard and gives PTT and FSK keying to the 990. Slick, simple and easy to build. I have all info for this gem also. So there you have it, ways to improve an already great radio. I really enjoy mine and wouldn't sell it for any money or trade for anything else out there.

FT-990 Superb Transceiver

aj4fm

I'm amazed by the receiver in this radio. I hear stations that with other high end radios, they are in the noise. Other than the FT-1000D with it's 2nd RX, this could well be the best
radio Yaesu have ever built. At the present mine
has only the standard 2.4 & 500 filters, but I will be adding a 250 soon. The radio is very easy to operate, it is failsafe and only does what it should do for the modes you select. No need for cumbersome menus and multi function buttons. Just knobs and single push buttons to make things happen. Wonder why it took me so long to decided this was the one I really needed. They are built very rugged, and all reviews I've seen, last forever without giving any problems. If you can find a nice clean used one, grab it. Those that have them are keeping them, so the best may be hard to find. 73, David-AJ4FM
