Best Shack in the box... so far...

Chris Meisch

So the 991a has been out now for about a year now. This has been my first base rig. I have however debated, tried, and pulled my hair out on other rigs out there. Are there better ones for VHF\UHF, yes. Are there better ones for HF... yes. Are their ones that can do both, possibly but not like the 991.

The 911 has been durable (handled my stupidity and is still working). Somewhat easy to use. Its been very helpful in learning the operations of Phone, Digital, CW, working the filters, and its just been an overall good rig to have.

What I don't like: Well compared to other rigs out there I wish I had more access to the filters directly from the front of the rig like what the ICOM-7300 has. Instead its menu driven which one can get lost. This can be overcome a little by some sort of rig interface (HRD, etc...). The built in tuner is a good thing to have but when it comes to things like a wire antenna, some dipoles, etc... you need to have a more robust tuner.

What I LOVE: the PAN Display, VHF\UHF\HF\FUSION, the interface is clean and easy to read, the dials are easy to work. I was able to reach out to Russia and Japan using a dipole and\or a end fed wire antenna.

Conclusion: Great beginners rig. Will keep even when I upgrade to an even better HF Rig. The rig is also great for field day as well. You just cannot go wrong having one.
