The Clansman PRC-320 is a lightweight HF/SSB radio station designed as part of the British Army's Clansman range of radio equipments for combat use throughout the world. It was used by long-range patrols and Special Forces because of its sky-wave range performance and hand generator system.

The equipment operates in the 2 to 30 MHz band with 100 Hz channel spacing, which gives a choice of 280 000 frequencies. Selection is by decade knobs which control a micro-miniature synthesizer locked to a temperature compensated reference oscillator, giving a high order of stability under all environmental conditions.

The PRC-320 provides SSB (USB), AM, CW (wide) and CW (narrow) facilities. Speech processing and automatic level control are employed to provide whisper speech facilities and a high mean output power.

A transmitter output power of 30 W PEP working into a 2.4 m whip antenna gives the PRC-320 a ground-wave communications range in excess of 40 km by day under normal conditions.

Great portable rig

Clansman PRC-320, Portable Shortwave Transceiver

The PRC-320 is a fun HF pack set that is perfect for portable, apartments and emergency use. It is a easy to use rig that is quick to setup and get on the air. You will be surprised what you can do with 40 Watts and a 2.5 meter whip while walking. For me it was E51M Cook Islands DXexpedition, 4816.8 mi (7751.9 km). I paid more ( maround 639 GBP ), but I got a refurbished 320 with lots of extra ancillaries.

bulletproof rig

Clansman PRC-320, Portable Shortwave Transceiver

Never used one as a ham, but these and the 321 were the standard radio's I used when in the British Army. Of the two, I prefer the 320, it was just as good as the 321, but much more manageable. Only thing I did not like was the very small indicator on the tuning unit. Otherwise it is just about as straight foreward as can be. Make sure you get a few spare batteries if you want to go portable.
