The Hallicrafters S-72 is a general coverage portable receiver. It can be powers from either AC, DC or batteries. There was also a long wave version, the Hallicrafters S-72L.
The S-72 contains eight tubes (seven 1-volt, one 3-volt) tubes and was designed for AC/DC (120 VAC or 90 VDC & 7.5 VDC batteries). The receiver featured a BFO for CW detection and passive AVC circuitry. Audio quality is excellent and abundant from either a 5-inch 4-ohm PM speaker or 2000 ohm headphone jack. Telescopic antenna or external antenna used on BC and SW bands. Selectivity is good, sensitivity is excellent on BC and SW bands, fair-to-good on LF band after recent alignment and parts replacement (paper capacitors, bypass capacitors, electrolytic capacitors and fresh tubes).
The original Hallicrafters schematics are known to contain errors for this receiver. The Howard Sams Photofact version of the schematic appears to be the most correct.
New price 1949 in the US: USD 79.95
