Great unit to use. I think this is the best rig in it's age bracket. Quite a few years under the antenna since these were made but it still performs well and holds its own against the modern plastics. Gets good signal reports and other operators say the audio is crisp and clear. This one won't be leaving the shack in a hurry.
Having been involved in Amateur Radio for almost six decades, I have yet to find a resonably priced rig that would tempt me to trade my 101E. Surely, it may not be as convenient to use as a 21st century, all singing , all dancing rig. After all, you do need to "plate and load" the rig before transmitting. However, for a CW op, like myself, with the narrow filter fitted it is a VERY useable machine, even today.
The main disadvantage that some op's would find, would be the lack of the WARC bands. I do not find this to be a disadvantage, as I can--and have--worked the world on this rig.
One huge advantage is that routine maintenance is easy! No surface mount devices, Hi!
Altogether, a very satisfactory piece of equipment that has given me almost three decades of reliable and efficient service.
just three words.i love it
