Successor of the Military RT-671/PRC-47, developed by Hughes.
The PRC-104 consists of the RT 1209 / URC Transceiver and AM-6874 / PRC-104 Amplifier and tuner.
The RT 1209 / URC is a miniturized SSB- transceiver in USB. LSB or Data mode from 2 to 29.999.9 MHz 100 Hz increments. Connections are provided for handset, headset, CW key or data input. The transmitter's output is a carrier of 250 mW. 26.5V, needed for the transceiver, are provided by the amplifier / tuner unit.
The AM-6874 / PRC-104 Amplifier and tuner amplifies the 0.25W from the transceiver to 20 W, has a built- in tuner and can switch the antenna output to different antennas.
Frequency is selected by decade push buttons.
Unlike its predecessors, there are no operational elements or lamps on the front. These functions are checked by the radio itself, and monitored as special tones to the handsets- especially useful at a tactical blackout.
