The Hallicrafters S-72L is the long wave version of Hallicrafters S-72. and the predecessor of the S-93.
The S-72 and S-72L differ only in frequency range. An early production variant featured a noise limiter which was controlled by a front-panel mounted toggle switch.
The S-72L contains eight tubes (seven 1-volt, one 3-volt) tubes and was designed for AC/DC (120 VAC or 90 VDC & 7.5 VDC batteries). Frequency coverage was from 170 to 400 kc, 540 to 1600 kc and 1.5 to 11.5 mc in four bands. The receiver featured a BFO for CW detection and passive AVC circuitry. Audio quality is excellent and abundant from either a 5-inch 4-ohm PM speaker or 2000 ohm headphone jack. Built-in loop antenna is used on 170 to 400 kc band. Telescopic antenna or external antenna used on BC and SW bands. Selectivity is good, sensitivity is excellent on BC and SW bands, fair-to-good on LF band after recent alignment and parts replacement (paper capacitors, bypass capacitors, electrolytic capacitors and fresh tubes).
The original Hallicrafters schematics are known to contain errors for this receiver. The Howard Sams Photofact version of the schematic appears to be the most correct.
