Roberts RC-828 reviews

Excellent Starter SWL Portable Radio

freddymcgavin

I purchased the Roberts RC-828 HF/VHF Receiver new for approx. 225 euros in 2005 from a dealer here in Ireland. I would describe it as a high end version of the Sangean 818 except with the addition of a cassette recorder and better quality components throughout. Unlike the Sangean the Roberts is a silver grey, metallic colour which is aesthetically more pleasing to the eye. Performance wise it is excellent on SW and SSB. However MW and FM leave a lot to be desired.
It has a separate BFO control which is handy for resolving narrow band signals. The radio also performs well receiving utility and aeronautical stations as it has complete HF frequency coverage. I have worked some rare DX with this little radio, all recorded on its handy built-in cassette recorder. The whip antenna is of a good size and easily picks up local SSB signals. For long distance DX on both SW and the amateur bands I use the accompanying 6m portable reel-wire the ANT-60 which provides excellent reception.
The Roberts RC-828 HF/VHF Receiver has now ceased production. However if you can find one second hand and in reasonably good condition my advice would be to snap it up. It is an excellent starter SWL radio. On HF and SW it certainly will not disappoint.
