A very extensive range of variants of the WJ-8617 was produced, no less than 50 (!) versions have been counted. The various types range in configuration, options and coverage. As the version number is rarely printed on the front and only occasionally handwritten on the rear, finding which is which is a challenge.
I own a 8618B receiver I bought for 800 dollars on eBay. It needed repairing and Steve Pappin made it like new. It is by a bit the most sensitive receiver I have ever used for VHF UHF. More than my ICOM R9000 and that's saying something. My Watkins Johnson 8618B is the best but it needs forced air cooling and rack mounting for ventilation. No intermod either.
