The advanced Kenwood TM-D700A dual bander allows you to harness APRS, GPS and SSTV technologies to provide world class communications. The new-generation mobile transceiver features a built-in TNC to offer a wide range of data communications options including simple packet operation using the AX.25 protocol. But above all the TM-D700A is fully equipped to make the most of APRS - Automatic Packet/Position Reporting System. And it can employeed as part of Kenwood’s Skycommand System II+ when used with the TS-2000 series. You will also enjoy wideband receive 118 MHz to 1.3 GHz (cellular blocked). This radio includes the MC-53DM DTMF backlit hand mic.
Terminal Interfaces: TNC AX.25 Level 2, Version 2, RS232C (9600/19200/38400/57600 bps), and GPS NMEA: RS-422 (4800 BPS), NMEA 96 RS232C (9600 BPS)
Before buying two second hand Kenwood TM-D700 rigs, I owned its replacement, the TM-D710. I was planning on buying another TM-D710 when I found a pair of D700s for sale and figured that two rigs were better than one.
The D700 is still a great rig for general APRS and dual band use. My main dislike is that power settings are not saved in memory, but I think that is normal for Kenwood radios.
The APRS functions are a little hard to use, because you must hold the function key for 2 or 3 seconds to change the buttons to do their APRS functions, so, for example, to send an extra beacon, you have to hold function for 2 - 3 seconds, then press bcon, then hold function for 2 - 3 seconds, then press bcon again.
Don't let anything in this review stop you from buying a second hand Kenwood TM-D700 for a reasonable price. It is still one of the better ways to get onto APRS, and on the used market, considerably less expensive than the TM-D710.
Estimating the value of a rig can be challenging. We collect prices paid by real hams over the years to help you estimate the value of a used Kenwood TM-D700A. Just bought or sold this model? Let us know what you traded it for and help other ham operators!
