This is by far the best Transceiver in the price range, i never buy the first new prototype till now. I waited for the reviews and decided to proceed with the purchase giving my 718 a long awaited rest. I was surprised by the receiving quality and capability of this new transceiver. Where did all the noise go, wonderful i can pick stations up like never before, antenna is the same even using the same SM6 mic that really sings with this unit.
My regular contacts overseas state that the sound quality is spot on and it punches thru, one even played back my QSO and it was surprisingly very good indeed very crisp. The water fall is fantastic how did i manage before without this tool. The dial is the smoothest i have ever used. I am impressed by the quality of this unit which is made in Japan. All i can say is that the Hype is correct what a great machine Thanks Icom with this baby you are spot on.
I first purchased this rig in 2000 for my Father, he used it day after day working the world on a dipole. Good reception especially with the DSP board added. After his passing i used the 718 as my main transceiver this time hooked up to a OCF dipole working the world on SSB.
100 watts is plenty, team it up with a desk mike like a SM6 and a good power supply capable of 20amps continuous and you are in business.
The best part is that it is simple you can get on pick up DX and go to the next signal while others are mucking around with adjusting knobs.
This is a great rig and this is why you can still pick one up brand new 16 years after it was introduced on the market.
This old 2 meter unit is a marvel easy to use and reliable need to access repeaters ,ok then place a tone board in it and its done. Good 25 watts output which is plenty to communicate with.
I was surprise how rugged and well build this unit is and best of all easy to repair if required the schematic is easily obtainable from the web and so is most of the parts. They don't make them like this anymore, get one before its to late.
